01 Problem
U-Belt students wanted a place to meet people from other campuses without handing over their identity.
02 What I built
The full server refactor: HTTP route factories and a WebSocket dispatcher that cut 1,623 lines from the server. I also built voice notes, the games (memory match, hot takes, flags, trivia) and the messenger-style mobile composer, extracted the chat components, fixed ops and Docker, and shipped v1.2.0.
03 Security notes
No accounts by design. The WebSocket relay runs behind Caddy on an OVH Singapore VPS. 77 server tests and 310 frontend tests guard the refactor.
04 Impact
The first product from The Avenir, our startup. It gives students across the University Belt somewhere to meet without giving up their identity.
05 What I took from it
Realtime products live or die on the boring parts: reconnection, ordering and a server you can still read six months later.
