Why I Chose Cybersecurity

By Salvador Vincent Javier

From Google's specialization to leading security teams across multiple orgs — here's how I fell in love with keeping the digital world safe.

In a world where everything is connected, someone has to make sure those connections are safe. That realization hit me during my first year of college, and it changed the trajectory of my career.

It started with curiosity. I'd been coding for a while — C, Python, some web development. But I kept asking the same question: "How do people break into these systems?" Not because I wanted to break things, but because I was fascinated by the cat-and-mouse game between attackers and defenders.

Then I enrolled in Google's Cybersecurity Professional Certificate. It was like someone opened a door to an entirely new world. Suddenly I was learning about SIEM tools, incident response frameworks, and the NIST Cybersecurity Framework. Concepts that had been abstract became concrete.

But the real turning point wasn't a course — it was community. When I joined CyberPH and started leading security initiatives at PUP Microsoft Student Community, I realized cybersecurity isn't just about technology. It's about people.

Every system is designed by people. Every vulnerability exists because a human made a decision. And every defense works because someone cared enough to think about what could go wrong before it did.

Now, as the Asst. Director for Infrastructure at CyberPH, I see the bigger picture. The Philippines' cybersecurity landscape is growing rapidly, but there's still a massive talent gap. We need more people who not only understand the technology but can communicate its importance to organizations and individuals.

My path in cybersecurity combines three things I love. Problem-solving — security is the ultimate puzzle; you're constantly thinking like both the attacker and defender. Continuous learning — the threat landscape changes daily, and you can never stop growing. Impact — every vulnerability you find and fix, every person you educate about phishing, every system you harden, it all matters.

I don't know exactly where this path leads. Maybe SOC analysis, maybe security engineering, maybe research. But I know one thing for certain: I chose cybersecurity because it chose me. The moment I understood that keeping the digital world safe was a mission worth dedicating my career to, there was no going back.
